New Year, Same You.
When the clock struck midnight on New Years Eve and the calendar turned to 2021, you did not become somebody new. You did not all of a sudden have the best haircut, a different physique, the book written, the new relationship, a different mindset or a bunch of money that you didn’t have at 11:59 p.m. That’s not how it works.
I believe that you should be striving every day of the year to be the best version of yourself. On August 13th, April 3rd or June 4th you should be working towards being the best you just the same as January 1st. There is no “new you”- there is a “best you” that is always evolving, changing and growing. Ultimately, you are the same person at your core.
Everyday that you wake up, the goal should be to be the best you. And every day that can look a bit different. Some days you wake up with amazing energy, a great mindset and a feeling that you are going to conquer anything that comes your way. Other days, getting out of bed and taking a shower is the most productive thing that you are able to manage. Both of those days, you are fundamentally the same person at the core.
So when companies declare that in the new year, you should be a new you, I feel that you should be offended by that. When you see a “new year, new you” advertisement, I suggest you challenge that notion. Why does there have to be a new you? What was wrong with the former you?
My answer: nothing. Nothing is wrong with you. There does not need to be a new you. You are perfectly imperfect just as you are. And that is not some permission slip to not strive to be better. That is a permission slip to give yourself grace and compassion every day as you work to be the very best you can be while stay true to who you genuinely are, at the core.
Be the same you, be the best you. Be the awesome you that you are every single day.
